We’re all feeling the festive cheer as 2024 winds down and the holiday season begins. Despite the temptations to give in to an unhealthy lifestyle for the month, it is possible to enjoy the holidays to their fullest, without compromising on your wellness. Start 2025 off feeling and looking good with these festive season survival tips…
80:20 – It’s Not a Diet, It’s a Lifestyle
At RENU Health Clinic, we believe in holistic health. To achieve this, traditional and complimentary health services are combined to ensure patients’ bodies and minds are supported in wellness. A crucial component here is dietetics and nutrition. A well- nourished body is a healthy one, and without the right nutrition, the mind cannot operate optimally.
“This is essential to remember in the festive period, where unhealthy food generally abounds,” confirms Dr. Melanie Childress, RENU’s Internal Medicine MD. Embracing the 80:20 principle will go a long way to help you manage your nutritional needs throughout the holidays:
- 80% of the time, choose healthy options and focus on portion control, incorporating low fat proteins and plenty of fresh vegetables
- 20% of the time, let loose and enjoy good food with family and friends
- Drink a lot of water to flush out the toxins and excess sugar
- Don’t skip meals to “make up” for bad eating – this will negatively affect your metabolism
Active Recovery; Preparing Your Body for 2025
While your body likely needs as much of a break as your mind this festive season, it is important to keep moving! “Becoming completely sedentary for any period of time simply isn’t good for overall health – especially when caloric intake is sure to increase,” advises Dr. Janine McKay, RENU’s Sports Chiropractic Physician and Functional Medicine Consultant.
Some active recovery exercises – many of which can be performed as a family – could include:
- Low intensity exercises
- Swimming, jogging, cycling and walking
- Dynamic/active stretching, foam rolling, pilates and yoga
